    The Other Face of Immigration

    887DE284-264E-4D62-B28C-38940B66A904

While some of us smoked up the grill yesterday and watched the annual fireworks show, Therese Patricia Okoumou climbed up the Statue of Liberty in protest of our demonstrative immigration laws here in the US. Watching the CNN coverage from my phone, gave way for our dear citizens to make hateful comments about a person that you could barely see. You couldn’t tell if the climber was black or white. You couldn’t see if they were male or female but we immediately knew the tiny image was of someone that felt the acts of this country was worth risking their life to change. Some expressed sympathy for the trained police officers that were risking their lives to get her down but no feeling for the individual who risked life and limb for a policy that continues to have children in cages and families displaced was shown. As the officers moved into a beautiful, 44-year-old immigrant from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, I welded up with a sense of pride that someone had the courage of Rosa Parks, to fight this systematically racist system. Post her name today and let’s work toward her immediate release. Therese Patricia Okoumou!!!
